Tarawa was originally a previously unnamed coral reef in the Central Pacific that was on the axis of World War II counterattack in the Second World War. On November 20, 1943, the U.S. military mobilized heavily to carry out a very tragic amphibious warfare here. The commander of the Japanese army, Masakiaki Shibasaki, admirals completed a 18-month fortification at Betty to block the enemy’s landing boat and to resist large-caliber artillery bombardment. He once boasted to his subordinates: "With 100 million troops in the United States, it took 100 years to defeat Talava.
