章学诚《文史通义》中对同时代的著名学者多有批评，尤其对袁枚的批评更是不遗余力，非但诋其为“不学无术”，甚至拟之为“无耻妄人”。综观二人平日论学言论，可知在学术见解上实有许多共通之处，如对当时考据流弊的抨击，不失为救弊之言。唯章氏以“纲常名教”衡量袁枚，谓其广收女弟子，无复男女之嫌；征刻诗稿，标榜声名。章氏鄙薄袁之为人，进而全盘否定其学术，也可谓过矣。
Zhang Xuecheng’s “History of Literature and History” criticized many famous scholars of the same era. Especially he criticized Yuan Mei for sparing no effort to criticize him. Instead of slandering him as “ignorant and ignorant”, he even thought of as “shameless man”. Looking at the two people’s comments on weekdays, we can see that there are many commonalities in academic opinions, such as criticizing the abuses of the test materials at that time, which are all good words for salvage. The only Zhang’s “Guanyuan Mingjiao” measure Yuan Mei, that its wide acceptance of female disciples, no complex men and women suspected; Zhang Yuan despise people, and then denied its academic, can be described as too men.
