The “lost ring”, a program launched during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, was the first “Alternate Reality Gaming” (ARG) worldwide. ARG is a nascent game form that uses real-world resources to accomplish virtual tasks and create real-life historical events as they complete their mission. ARG’s challenge to virtual / real dichotomy is also accompanied by doubts about traditional dichotomies such as narrative / storytelling, internalization / transcendence. ARG is overridden at the logical level and extends to the areas of art, politics and religion at the same time. In this paper, we discuss the concept, characteristics and practical significance of ARG around the specific case of “lost ring” around the dichotomy.
