The work of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has shown that the coal seam can produce a large amount of natural gas that meets the quality of pipeline transportation. The amount of methane contained in coal seams in the United States is estimated to be more than 300 trillion feet3, equivalent to the already-identified U.S. natural gas stockpile. So using the necessary processes to pump and recover so much gas is really beneficial. The current methane emissions from the United States coal seam into the atmosphere is 200 million feet to 3 days. Many of the methane in the coal seam should be pumped out and stored before mining.
