【Elective Note: Scaring yourself will scare people! U.S. scientists report in the British Medical Journal that some Chinese and Japanese people who believe that the number 4 is unlucky have a significantly higher death rate than usual on the 4th of each month. Among them, the chance of dying from heart disease is particularly high. In Putonghua, Cantonese, and Japanese, the pronunciation of the number 4 is similar to that of “death.” Therefore, some Chinese and Japanese have a superstitious mentality of taboo number 4, and think that the days of 4 are not auspicious. However, scientists have shown that this kind of psychology is very harmful to oneself and may even endanger life. American scientists investigated the death certificates of nearly 210,000 Chinese and Japanese Americans and 47 million white Americans from 1973 to 1998 and studied their death dates. It was found that on the 4th of each month, the number of Chinese and Japanese deaths was significantly higher than in other days. The number of people who died of heart disease was 13% higher. 】
