OBJECTIVE: To investigate the surface changes of double “J” catheter at different time after indwelling and the relationship with the primary disease. Methods: Bacterial culture and scanning electron microscopic observation of 25 cases of 26 double “J” catheters were performed. Results: The number of inflammatory attachments and crystals on the surface of the catheter increased gradually with the prolongation of the catheter retention time. The number of inflammatory exudates and crystals on the surface of the catheter less than 4 weeks was significantly less than that of the catheter left indwelling for more than 4 weeks . Further analysis found that the number of inflammatory exudates on the surface of the catheter used in renal and ureteral calculi and ureteral strictures was significantly greater than that of catheters placed in ureteral bladder replantation for other reasons. CONCLUSIONS: In general, there should not be more than 4 weeks left in the body for double “J” catheters
