卡勒的《抒情诗理论》以古希腊的爱情诗开局,以美国的现代自由体诗收篇,分析了西方抒情诗的诸多名篇名作。在具体作品阐释的基础上,他系统梳理了相关批评文献,结合黑格尔的美学、奥斯汀的话语行为理论、阿多诺的辩证美学,从体裁特征、内在品质、反摹仿性、公共话语模式四个方面,阐明了抒情诗独有的颂扬、夸张、表演、节奏、呼语、戏剧性、非进行现在时等修辞特色。他的《结构主义诗学》超越了文学批评中的唯阐释论,而《抒情诗理论》以间接言说、反摹仿、仪式化等批评理念,建构了一套结构主义的抒情诗学,突破了自亚里士多德以来的唯摹仿论。
