The June issue of the Soviet Union’s “Economic Issues” published Ivanov’s long essay, “The Working Class in Western Europe Fighting for Poverty, Fighting for Peace and Democracy,” and gave a brilliant account of the present life and struggles of the working people in Western Europe. The following is a summary of the article. The impoverishment of the working class in European capitalist countries is now being pursued at an unprecedented rate and scale because of the efforts of the reactionary governments in these countries to turn their people into slaves to American imperialism and to make economic and Militarization of social and political life, unlimited expansion of armaments, and preparations for a new war of aggression. An important indicator of poverty is the continuous reduction of real wages. In the post-war period, despite the inflationary pressures, rising prices and the diminished purchasing power of currencies, these reactionary governments still implemented the policy of “freezing wages.”
