据唐代《明州牒》等多种牒文、《唐文续拾》《全唐文补编》、日本《传教大师全集》《邻交征书》《日吉社神道秘密记》等中日文献记载,日僧最澄(767~822)入唐、回日本及带回茶籽播种均有确切记载。他于唐贞元廿年(804)八月到达明州(今宁波),翌年五月回日本,是目前确认的中国茶种传播海外第一人,是海上茶路的开创者。2013年4月23日,由海内外专家、学者在宁波通过的《海上茶路·甬为茶港研讨会共识》,对此作了确认。
