INTRODUCTION Over the past 25 years, many efforts have been made to develop a compact, unobtrusive ECG monitor for some ambulatory patients who are ambulatory and suspicious. The Holter tape recorder is currently the most popular device for monitoring infrequent and transient arrhythmias, but it only records continuously for 24 hours and subsequently requires off-line data analysis. We developed a wearable microcomputerized system to monitor and analyze an ECG lead. The device we designed was for an online real-time analysis, which passed the normal ECG and only captured the signal of interest. It can also be worn uninterrupted for days, in order to record abnormal heart rhythms that may only occur once in a few weeks. Our device has a stored-program microcomputer that has the basic properties of a larger, smaller computer. The two main features that limit our computer’s performance over larger minicomputers are
