The fuel tank for an air-launched cruise missile is the largest part of the missile and consists of four A357 aluminum alloy castings. These castings can replace machined parts and welded structures without affecting the life of the missile or other critical properties. Aluminum is cast into a mold that consists of a core of sand and a metal chill, giving the casting a high degree of mechanical properties. Castings were examined by visual inspection, fluoroscopic flaw detection and X-ray fluoroscopy. The helium leak test of the tank assembly confirmed that the tank leaked nearly zero within ten years of refueling.
