By examining the cereal trade activities in Hong Kong for the past 150 years, this article attempts to glimpse the history of long forgotten by historians and to reveal the pivotal role played by Chaoshan businessmen during this period. This article seeks to confirm that Chaoshan businessmen are not only participants and founders of foreign economic activities during the opening of Hong Kong, but in fact have long dominated rice trade in the entire Indian Peninsula to southern China. The activities and contributions of Chaoshan businessmen in history should be re-identified and evaluated from the perspective of a wider regional economic circle.
