1969年年底,吴宓在写给南京大学教授郭斌稣而被工宣队由邮局截留的长信中,分阶段地讲述了自己在“文革”爆发至此的经历,可读作一篇较完整的关于所历“文革”的自述(见《吴宓书信集》)。1973年5月25日,吴宓回头读自己当年日记,说“觉1968年之宓,实为最紧张、最忙、最苦矣”。1968年下半年至1969年,他的日记被“抄没”并构成其罪案;被扣发工资(致不得不向“故妻”求助);居室为人觊觎,被迫数度搬迁。1969年元旦的日记中说:
At the end of 1969, Wu Yong, in his long letter written to Nanjing University by Professor Guo Binxiu, who was intercepted by the post office, made a staged account of his own experiences in the “Cultural Revolution” eruption so as to be read as an article Complete self-report on the calendar “Cultural Revolution ” (see “Wu Jie Epistles”). May 25, 1973, Wu Mi read his diary back then, saying, “I feel that in 1968 I was actually the most tense, the most busy, the most bitter.” From the second half of 1968 to 1969, his diary was “copied” and constituted his crime; his salary was deducted (which had to go to “his wife” for help); his room was shy and forced to relocate for several times.
