Objective To study the effect of long-term smoking on cardiovascular function. Methods Twenty healthy subjects with a smoking age of (23 ± 5) years were tested. Each smoker had a non-smoker healthy person of similar sex, age and weight as a control. During the test, the heart rate and blood pressure of the test subjects were recorded continuously. Results Compared with the control group, smokers had: (1) heart rate accelerated less during severe Valsalva (P <0.05). (2) Arterial blood pressure increased systolic pressure after Valsalva motion (P <0.01), diastolic blood pressure (P <0.05). (3) Heart rate returned to normal after Valsalva movement for a long time (P <0.01). (4) Blood pressure returned to normal after Valsalva action for a long time (P <0.01). The above results show that the decrease of blood pressure reflex is due to long-term peripheral vasoconstriction, and the result of the decrease of heart reflex is the result of weakened blood pressure reflex. This prolonged reflex may be a manifestation of changes in parasympathetic pressure reflex. Conclusion Long-term mass smokers may be associated with cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction
