A series of studies were conducted to examine the impact of infection on nursing care in US hospitals and to determine the status of communicable disease research in health care in the US Center for Disease Control (CDC). Using surveillance statistics on infections, they estimate that nearly 3 million people in the United States have access to hospitalized care and about 2 million inpatient infections each year. Ninety percent of the pathogens in infected patients treated for treatment are bacterial, accounting for 29 million hospital days of acute care care, equivalent to 10% of hospital stays for acute infectious diseases. The annual direct medical costs of infectious diseases in the United States are 4.8 billion U.S. dollars.
