In 1976, the West knew that Spire (AA-7) was one of three new types of Soviet air-to-air missiles. A little earlier than the AA-6 Spicy Air-to-Air Bomb demonstrated in 1975 Spire is the successor to the AA-3 Anab, somewhat similar to Anaboo. However, the performance of the “spire” apparently some higher, and the body slightly larger. In particular, there are control surface supplements at the rear of the missile and “duck” flaps in front of the wing, indicating high maneuverability. Two types of radar guidance and infrared seeks have been reported, and each one has become a standard weapon for interceptor MiG-23. Estimated length of the radar type is about 4.3 meters, while the infrared type is slightly shorter. The weight may be between 300 kg and 350 kg, which may include the weight of a warhead of 40 kg or more. We suspect it uses a solid propellant, radar and infrared range may be 35 km and 15 km respectively. Condition: “Spire” air-to-air bombs envisaged on the MiG-21 and MiG-23 aircraft.
