The Analects of Confucius: Newly Compiled Edition
Written by Qian Ning
“The Analects of Confucius: Newly Compiled Edition” breaks up “The Analects of Confucius”’ original twenty-chapter layout, starts with the definition and connotation of “ren” ("benevolence" or "altruism"), reconstructs the original texts based on Confucius’ sequence of thoughts, and integrates the fundamental thoughts and primary perspectives of the original texts as a whole. According to this systematic analysis and reconstruction, without deleting a word, “The New Analects” converts a whole new aspect, which reveals logic and depth of Confucianism from the texts: “ren” ("benevolence" or "altruism") as the core, “xiao”(filial piety), “ti” (love and respect one's elder brother), and “xin” (faithfulness) as its presenting patterns, “li” (rituals and forms of propriety) as its externalizing form, study and cultivation as the way of its exploration, and governing a nation and conducting oneself in society as the way of practice. Confucius’ denunciation to the politics and critiques of various people of his time are similar to current case study, which is to explain and elucidate principle and connotation of “ren”, and how to use it in specific cases.
The compiled “The Analects of Cunfucius” becomes texts with themes, arguments, developments, refined organizations, and case studies. It turns into a new classic needing no complicated interpretation. The chief librarian of Fudan University Library, Professor Ge Jianxiong says about this book, “Words no adding, words no deleting, compiling instead of composing, ‘The Analects’ renewing.”
