The novel Shame came out in South Africa at the time of its publication in 1999 and caused a great deal of controversy. Coach seems to have used the novel to criticize the University of Cape Town, which is both his alma mater and where he teaches, following the corporatization of the neoliberal path; Lucy’s reaction to his rape in the face of violent crime seems perplexing The NAC’s seemingly accused Coetzee of racism; the notion of a “rainbow kingdom” that triumphed morally seems to be questioned in the novel. In response to these disputes, this article through the interpretation of the novel itself, pointed out that this controversy is misleading different ways.
