《宋史·郭忠恕传》记载郭忠恕“尤善画,所图屋室重复之状,颇极精妙。”郭忠恕以善画“屋室”被载入宋史,其界画造诣可想而知。根据“所图屋室重复之状”可知郭忠恕界画艰巨复杂,这比起以往“屋室”作为山水画中的点缀来看,已有了本质的不同,界画从点缀或是从属的地位一跃成了绘画的主题。郭忠恕《明皇避暑宫图》中,占画面三分之二面积的是层叠盘曲的楼阁,背景的山峰、左侧的水、树木都是楼阁的陪衬,这说明一方面界画作为一种独立的绘画形式得到充分的尊重;另一方面界画的表现技巧已经很成熟,能很巧妙的来表达作者的思想。
