北魏时有两支匈奴人分别被称作“西河胡”与“河西胡”,因二者名称相近,易为混淆,且事关民族地理分布问题,故在此特为一辨。 北魏时的西河有两指,一是指北魏所设的西河郡(治兹氏城,今山西汾阳县),如太宗永兴二年,诏将军周观率众诣西河、离石,镇抚山胡(《魏书·太宗纪》)。一是指河曲以北的黄河。穆帝三年,以击白部、刘虎之功,求得句注陉以北地区,其“东接代郡,西连西河、朔方,方数百里”(《魏书·序纪》)。 There were two Huns in the Northern Wei Dynasty called “Xihehu” and “Hexihu”, respectively.
