The current population of nine in the European Economic Community is about 260 million. Due to the economic downturn, the unemployed in the nine countries reached 6.93 million in July this year, an increase of 17.4% over the same period of last year. By the end of September, the number of unemployed people had reached 7.1 million, setting a record high. The Guardian newspaper said that as the economy continues to decline, the number of unemployed may reach 9 million by the end of this year and will continue to increase next year. Among the nine countries, the largest number of unemployed people in the UK was 2.06 million; Italy took the second place with 1.81 million; France took third place with about 1.52 million; West Germany was slightly better, but there were more than 860,000. Strikingly, among the nine unemployed, 41.7% of young people under the age of 25 (in July figures) actually account for 41% of the unemployed.
