Anyone who reads a book and then goes to see a movie based on that book generally leaves the movie feeling a little disappointed. Why might this be? Both books and movies serve the purpose of entertainment. Both books and movies offer characters and plots. And, both books and movies provide a setting for a story. Books, however, offer a more attractive and complex form of entertainment than movies.
Although movies are entertaining to watch, books have advantages over them. First, books, in comparison with movies, can more easily catch hold of the depths of characters and create a complex setting through the use of rich description. Books leave it up to the reader to interpret, imagine, and recreate the story in his or her own mind. However, movies are action packed and provide lots of visual stimuli (视觉刺激); still, it is the movie not the viewer that interprets the characters, plot and setting. Second, books are not limited to time. A writer can write as much or as little as necessary in order to create and tell a story. Movies, on the other hand, are limited to an hour and a half to two hours of entertaining time before the audience begins to get restless. Last, reading is an intellectual form of entertainment. Readers can improve their level of reading and vocabulary in a harmless, healthy, and pleasurable way. Movies, on the other hand, are not as complex and entertaining as books, and they leave nothing to interpret. Therefore, the advantages and entertainment value of books outweigh those of movies. To conclude, books, through interpretation, help the reader develop a sense of relationship to the characters and the story itself, but movies entertain strictly. Books are a better form of entertainment than movies.
  4. What can we know from Paragraph 2?
  A. Movies are usually time limited.
  B. Books provide more visual stimuli.
  C. Books leave readers nothing to interpret.
  D. Movies can easily catch the depths of characters.

  A. Movies often make people disappointed.
  B. Both books and movies entertain strictly.
  C. Books have many advantages over movies.
  D. Movies and books are similar in many aspects.
  7. What can be the best title for the text?
  A. Movies: Easy Form of Entertainment
  B. Books: Better Form of Entertainment
  C. Why Are We Disappointed at Movies?
  D. How to Produce Movies Based on Books?

“Who does the cooking in your home?” I’m often asked by my colleagues. “My wife and I share it 50/50,” I usually say without hesitation.
It’s a lie, of course. We’re pretty much even (相等的) when it comes to the children and the elderly. But the paying of bills isn’t 50/50—my wife pays all sorts of household expenses, so I never even have to set eyes on them. And the cooking isn’t 50/50, either.
The truth is that I am the cook. On my recent 40th birthday, I received the following gifts from my children: a new pot, two mini bottles of truffle oil, a decorative salad-dressing pourer, and a juice-making machine. For a moment I longed for something more manly, a cricket bat, perhaps, and then had to admit that all these things would be useful for me.
It’s not that my wife can’t or doesn’t like to cook (she makes delicious Welsh cakes). Nor has it always been this way. In the early years of our marriage I’d be relaxing with a glass of wine while my wife prepared for dinner after work.
But at some point that changed and I became the cook. Ten years with my wife gave me the rewards (回報)—I can throw together a roast, and I can make much foreign food. But I have truly become a monster in the kitchen, unable to keep myself away from cooking. “You have to add Dijon to the sauce; it brings out the taste of the cheese,” I volunteer, as my wife is cooking. “Quick, stir (搅拌) in the butter so the dish becomes delicious.” Is it any wonder that my wife has given up coming into the kitchen while I find the whole process of chopping, mixing, and adding things deeply satisfying?
  8. What do the author and his wife probably share evenly at
  home?

  B. he is in charge of the cooking at home
  C. his children have made wrong choices

Music is an important part of life today. It is a source of entertainment, and it is a way to express emotions. But music is not only all this, it is also something that can be used to create a strong focus while people are working and is generally beneficial to the human brain and specifically the adolescent brain.
Music can reduce anxiety and depression, as well as improving mood and memory. Adolescents represent a stage in development when stress levels are unsteady. An analysis shows that listening to music lowers the stress hormone (荷爾蒙) in the brain. Ashford University also states that music has also proven to be effective across a variety of treatment ways for conditions ranging from premature birth to depression to Parkinson’s disease.
Music is also a way to stimulate (刺激) the brain and help increase productivity. In Elena Mannes’ study “The Power of Music” through National Public Radio (NPR), she states the fact that music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function. Tests have also shown that listening to background music can increase productivity. “We often listen to music as we do our work,” says visual artist, Tova Engel, “It is super helpful because it allows us all to do our own thing to create more art.”
Research done by Dr Jonathan Burdette, a professor at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, further proves the benefit of music on the brain. Dr Burdette conducted a study where he and his fellow investigators used a technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI), to find changes in blood flow in the brain. To summarize, Dr Burdette’s research shows that listening to music that you like will improve brain connectivity, especially when doing independent work that requires a lot of internal thought. As adolescents spend a lot of time working on computers or even just doing work on paper, music can help teens concentrate on their thinking. 12. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
  A. Music is mind medicine.
  B. Music is good for the brain’s growth.
  C. Music helps adolescents free from stress.
  D. Music helps patients recover from cancer.
  13. Why does Tova Engel like listening to music according to the text?
  A. It stimulates her body.
  B. It helps her lower stress.
  C. It gives her more strength.
  D. It can improve her creativity.
  14. What’s the finding of music in Dr Burdette’s study?
  A. It helps teens play on computer.
  B. It lets teens get closer with each other.
  C. It helps teens focus on their thinking.
  D. It improves the speed of teens’ thinking.
  15. What may be the best title for the text?
  A. Music Helps Students Get Rid of Stress
  B. Music’s Benefit to the Adolescents’ Brain
  C. Music Makes Adolescents Fond of Art
  D. Music’s Function on the Brain Development
