An efficient spark generator for pulsed underwater sounding with underwater mine-sweeping can discharge repeatedly at a frequency of approximately 15 Hz for at least 1 h without the need for replacement and maintenance. The spark generator has a tubular cathode spaced from the extended integral anode and the anode extends coaxially along the length of the tubular cathode to fill the cylindrical insulator between the anode and the cathode. The anodes, cathodes and insulators are fixed to the flanges and have the least resistance when towed in water at 35 kn. The choice and configuration of the spark generator material ensures that a nominal, constant gap is maintained between the anode and the cathode.
