向魏晋溯源与回归是元明书风的主要倾向,活跃于明末清初的徐渭、张瑞图、王铎,傅山等挺身而出、抗俗而行,试图挽狂澜于既倒,但终因寡不敌众,再加上王铎、张瑞图在人格方面的遭人鄙弃,而没有发生多少实质性的影响。因而,明亡清立的王朝更叠与历史动荡,并没有使那从元、明一泻千里的“回归”大潮易轨改辙。相反,伴随着康、乾诸世皇帝老子对董其昌与赵孟頫的尊崇与偏嗜,以及由此而引发的那种“楚王好细腰,国中多饿人” The origin and return to the Wei and Jin Dynasties are the main tendencies of the style of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties.
