本文从语用的角度比较了副词“根本”与“始终”在使用上的异同。“根本”主要出现在对某一特定话语的预设进行否定的小句前面，具有加强语气，增强否定强度的功能；“始终”主要出现在对某一特定话语的预期进行滞定的小句前面，具有否定对某一事实的预期，凸显句意焦点的作用。
