Once a year, you might see some people running along the road, pushing prams[婴儿车] as fast as they can along Hessle Road in Hull, East Yorkshire. However, there aren’t any babies in the prams, but adults, instead. They jump out of the prams and drink lots of beer at pubs along the road, before jumping back in.
It’s called a Pram Race[推婴儿车大赛], and it earns money for charities[慈善], and has happened here for many years. It began with just a few people racing, but fifteen to twenty prams normally race now, watched by crowds of around three thousand.
It all started when Hull was a fishing town.
Every Friday afternoon, fishermen’s wives used to run with their babies to pick up their money. They needed to pay their bills and buy food quickly, before their husbands returned from sea.
Hull is on the River Humber, very near the sea, where you can have a traditional[传统的] holiday. It’s not far from the important city of York, the Yorkshire Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District.
