我国火山岩分布广泛,从太古代到第四纪各个地质时代都有产出.与次火山岩有关的矿产甚为丰富.著名的斑岩铜(钼)矿、玢岩铁矿以及斑岩金矿的含矿岩石或成矿母岩多为次火山岩;此外,尚有银、汞、铀、锡、铅、锌、铍、重晶石、萤石、冰洲石、钾等.由此可见,加强对次火山岩的深入研究,无论在理论上还是在找矿上,都有重要意义.关于次火山岩的定义,国内外都存在着不同的理解,争论较大.笔者认为,次火山岩与火山岩是同一岩浆源而不同相的产物,生成时间与火山岩大致同时,岩石成分及赋存空间与火山岩基本一致,形成深度很浅,多貌具熔岩状、浅成岩状(斑岩类)及角砾岩状,与围岩具有侵入接触关系,是一种未侵入到地表的超浅成岩体.据此定义,本文就次火山岩的分类和命名方法,提出粗浅的划分进行讨论,不妥之处,请批评指正.
