It is accepted that leukocytes contained in blood components of the background are the most likely source of CMV infection in immunocompromised and immunocompromised recipients. Study Design and Methods A randomized study was conducted to determine whether a leukocyte filter can effectively prevent CMV infection in neonates with transfusion in CMV-endemic areas. All donor blood was irradiated before use to prevent graft-versus-host disease after transfusion. Recipient CMV infections were monitored by seroconversion (production of IgM anti-CMV) and CMV-DNA isolation. Results Of the 33 infants who received filtered blood, 3 (9%) and 1 were infants
