On the basis of the work about notch sensitivity of aggregative materials in fracture testsby Alberto Carpinteri,the relationships between relative crack depth and brittlenessnumber,crack extension force as well as the force of collapse at ultimate strength for cy-lindrical specimens with ring-shaped cracks have been obtained.It was found that theparameter brittleness number can be extensively applied to metallic materials.The pos-sibility of the use of brittleness number to deal with the as-cast magnesium alloy,me-dium or high strength steels under the condition of fracture at low stress has been dis-cussed.
