昙曜在云冈为北魏太祖拓跋珪以下五帝开凿的五窟(习称“昙曜五窟”)以及因之而形成的“云冈模式”,给中国石窟艺术注入了新的活力,风流所及,影响到北中国的许多地区。但是,现存昙曜五窟的遗迹并不单纯,五个窟内的造像属于一、二、三期的都有,本文对昙曜五窟中各期的造像进行进一步的区分,并在此基础上,试对云冈第20窟西壁坍塌的时间及昙曜五窟最初的布局设计进行初步探讨。
