“It is/was...that...” is a more common emphatic sentence pattern. Although this sentence pattern was studied in middle schools, it still confuses many students in universities because of the more complicated usage. Here are some issues to be aware of when learning the sentence pattern. 1. Use the time adverbial or place adverbial where the case of when, where is emphasized If it is not a prepositional phrase, one can occasionally see that after using the when adverb instead of the time adverbial, use where instead of the adverbial adverb: that it was this a[ternoon when I saw Mr Jay. I saw Jay in this afternoon.
