From 1937 to 1945, more than 207,000 Taiwanese were brought into Japanese service. These surviving former Japanese soldiers and military men are now called “TEJSS”. As a result of the “Japanese soldiers” experience during the war, some of these Taiwanese native Japanese soldiers returned to the mainland after the war have experienced rough ups and downs in mainland China, especially after a series of ultra-leftist movements after 1957. Neither the Chiang Kai-shek government nor the Lee Teng-hui government have overlooked the need of tens of thousands of soldiers who survived the war and returned to Taiwan. This article interviewed a total of eleven Taiwanese Japanese soldiers: five are now living in all over Taiwan and six in Tianjin, China. They talked about the reason for joining the army. They not only witnessed the effectiveness of the education of the imperialists, but also implied economic, family and regional considerations.
