据美国1975年出版的《地质灾害》一书中洪水统计资料表明,美国历史上洪水频繁,损失很大。近130年(1844—1973年)共损失291.5亿美元(均按1973年物价估算)。年损失在一亿美元以上的有32年。最近25年的损失等于过去105年损失的总和。1913年以后,年损失在10亿美元以上的有10年,20亿美元以上的有4年,30亿美元以上的有1年,即1972年。洪水受灾地区,以密西西比河流域,特别是它的支流密苏里河和俄亥俄河最严重,其次是东北部大西洋沿岸各州,再次是西北部太平洋沿岸各州,其他地区也均有不同程度的水灾损失。美国本世纪一些年份损失超过10亿美元的水灾情况列表如下:
Flood statistics in the United States, published in 1975 in the book Geological Disaster, show that floods are frequent and have suffered a heavy loss in U.S. history.
