19世纪初,西方列强即开始了对中国台湾的侵扰。但是清政府直至1874年侵台事件发生后,才认识到台湾战略地位的重要,遂采取措施加强台湾防务。其中,沈葆桢是从事台湾防务建设的第一人,其贡献也是十分突出的。 In the early 19th century, the Western powers started the invasion of China Taiwan.
