A team at Bell Labs and WestEngineers tested a long-haul optical communications system capable of transmitting more than 1,000,000 simultaneous bi-directional sessions. In Atlanta, 432 megabits per second of laser pulses were transmitted through an approximately 150-mile fiber optic line-the equivalent of two large U.S. cities. Light path consists of two 36-core fiber optic cable connected to the east and west side of the fiber loop. Eight regenerators are used throughout the line to amplify the signal, with each regenerator spaced about 20 miles apart. Engineers also used a lower rate of 144 trillion pulses per second to achieve a transmission test that did not require a regenerator increase over longer distances (27 miles).
