Bryan Van Norden, an American who specializes in Chinese philosophy, has spent much time in Asia and has taught at three esteemed institutions in the US, China, and Singapore.The book is intended to raise interest in Asian philosophy among a wide audience, particularly American students,philosophy faculty, and administrators.Van Norden is keen to promote the study of Asian philosophy;the end of Chapter One tasks faculty and administrators with diversifying their hiring practices and asks students to urge their teachers to broaden course offerings beyond West philosophy.
