1934年,在上海出版的第三期《音乐杂志》上刊登了一条“征求有中国风味之钢琴曲启事”,征稿发起人为当时旅行中国的俄国著名作曲家兼钢琴家齐尔品。不久,评比揭晓,获首奖的作品就是当时在上海国立音专求学的贺绿汀的《牧童之笛》(后改为《牧童短笛》)。这首钢琴作品旋律优美流畅,织体简炼明澈,带着作者童年欢娱质朴的生活情趣和江南乡间清丽秀美的格调,至今为一般音乐爱好者所喜爱。不无巧合的是,与《牧童之笛》同时,一首名为《牧童之乐》的钢琴曲荣获了二等奖。它出自当时一位北方音乐家之手,这位音乐家就是现任北京市政协常委、中国音乐学院前副院长,如今已七十四岁高龄的老志
