In 1998, the “Anwar Incident” broke the pattern of ethnic politics in Malaysia and the civic politics of turning from ethnic politics to super-ethnic groups became more and more trendy and formed a new pattern of “two-line system.” In response to the new situation, the DAP broke through the scope of Chinese political parties and promptly made major policy adjustments, putting forward a “third road” political line of “secular democracy ”. The policy was shifted to promoting political democracy, opening up the society and expanding Civil liberties and improving people’s livelihood, calling for the establishment of a democratic, fair and welfare country. Therefore, it is not only supported by the majority of Chinese, but also supported by a considerable number of ethnic groups such as Ma-Indian. However, the deep-rooted ethnic politics in Malaysia and the DAP’s transition from a Chinese political party to a popular political party will be a tortuous process.
