Zhang Hongnian (2000) examines the translocation phenomenon in two versions of the Cantonese Made Easy (CME) 1888 and 1907 and found that there was a considerable increase in the use of the Cantonese Gaoping Transposition and Ascendency Translocation during the past ten years. The purpose of this article is to explore the following two questions: (1) whether the growth reflected in the two CMEs is a single phenomenon; and (2) what is the shift in tone between before and after CME. The results of the inspection confirmed Zhang’s observation. In addition, based on our examination of earlier materials, we hypothesize that the shift should have occurred before the 1870s. Assuming that the rate of increase in tonality as reflected by the earlier material remains unchanged, we speculate that the spread of the gauge of high-level tone ends earlier than the ascent of high. This hypothesis is supported by the use of tone-shifting in early material and the findings of modern Cantonese.
