This is the 1984 ACM Turing Award presentation. It is well-known that N.Wirth made outstanding contributions in the development of a series of innovative programming languages such as Euler, ALGOL-W, Modula and Pascal. The Wirth language is said to be characterized by its simplicity, its economy of design and its high engineering quality. As CACM’s Editor-in-Chief wrote: “Wirth’s insightful and surprising results in his quest for the proper formal formulation of system programming.” In his presentation, Wirth introduced a brief history of his major projects, Conclusions, with particular emphasis on the principles that guide him in his work. He is currently designing and developing Lilith, a personal computer related to the Modula-2 language.
