Colombia’s clothing imports this year is expected to decline According to overseas media reports, in 1999, the scale of the Colombian garment market was 5.22 billion US dollars. Among them, the share of imported products in the market was 13%, reaching 68.6 million U.S. dollars, down 9% over 1998. The U.S. Department of Commerce forecasts that Colombia’s garment imports this year are estimated to have dropped 8.2% to 63 million U.S. dollars, of which 52% are knitwear. The United States has always been Colombia’s main source of garments, with a market share of 58% -60%. Last year, the total amount of clothing exported by the United States to Colombia dropped by 7% to only 41.2 million U.S. dollars and is expected to continue to drop to 38 million U.S. dollars this year. However, local businesses believe the import from the United States this year is expected to reach 50 million U.S. dollars in unofficial records due to the rampant activity of importing garments from the United States illegally or smuggled.
