Abstract:vocabulary is the basic content that must be mastered in learning a language. Aiming at the problems existing in college students’ learning practical English vocabulary, this paper puts forward the corresponding learning strategies and improvement methods, aiming to help college students master practical English vocabulary more fully and lay a good foundation for their future learning.

In terms of the overall learning situation of practical English vocabulary, many students have some outstanding problems in the process of learning, such as: lack of interest in learning, weak basic knowledge, unclear learning objectives, single learning methods, low learning efficiency, lack of systematic learning strategy training and vocabulary mastery far lower than the syllabus Set standards, etc. The main reason is that practical English vocabulary learning can not be paid attention to. Many college students think that the accumulation of vocabulary only takes a little time to learn independently after class, and other more important knowledge content should be learned in class. However, in fact, if the students’ vocabulary base is weak, it is difficult to understand the complex sentence structure, which is not helpful to improve their English level. Therefore, in order to improve their English comprehensive quality and master practical English, they should pay attention to vocabulary learning and grasp practical English vocabulary thoroughly and comprehensively by adopting scientific learning methods.
In order to achieve better understanding and memory effect, college students can use the modular memory method appropriately when learning English practical vocabulary. First, we should present the vocabulary in textbook in a scientific way. Generally, the vocabulary of each unit in College English textbooks is more, and students’ learning tasks are heavy. If we want to read all the words through, they will occupy a large amount of classroom time. And this centralized processing of word memory will also increase the students’ learning burden and will not benefit their long-term memory. Therefore, in order to strengthen the memory effect and improve the interest of English vocabulary learning, students can divide the vocabulary in the teaching material into several modules for step-by-step learning, which not only reduces the learning burden, but also avoids the boredom caused by the long-term vocabulary memory, and greatly improves their vocabulary learning efficiency. Vocabulary accumulation is the basic prerequisite for acquiring a language, and it is an inevitable problem for every learner. From the current situation that most non English majors are not ideal in vocabulary learning, this problem is largely related to the students’ failure to master scientific and correct learning strategies in the learning process. Therefore, in the ordinary learning process, college students should consciously strengthen the use of vocabulary learning strategies under the guidance and help of teachers, so as to improve their vocabulary learning quality and efficiency. First, the word formation strategy is adopted. Word formation is one of the basic means to acquire vocabulary. Practical English vocabulary is very rich, involving a wide range of fields, among which compound words and derived words generated by word formation account for a large proportion. When students memorize vocabulary, they can divide them scientifically according to the word formation law, and derive the meaning of the whole word from the meaning of known parts.
In practical English vocabulary, it is difficult for a single isolated word to express its specific meaning accurately. Only in a specific language environment can the meaning of the word be reflected. The situation created in text reading provides a good training platform for students to better learn vocabulary. Understanding and remembering new words in reading is one of the most effective ways to develop vocabulary learning. To some extent, students will consolidate and strengthen the vocabulary they have mastered in the process of reading the text, and also help to learn new vocabulary.
In conclusion, vocabulary accumulation and memory play an important role in practical English learning of college students, and students should pay enough attention to it. On the one hand, under the guidance of teachers, the knowledge content of practical English vocabulary learning is divided into zero and modular memory is adopted; on the other hand, students should master scientific and effective learning strategies, strengthen the training of discourse reading, so as to effectively consolidate the skills of English language and improve their learning quality and efficiency.
