Before the Opium War, foreign missionaries, businessmen, politicians and others had already started a batch of Chinese and English newspapers and periodicals in Guangzhou, such as Monthly Statistical Report on Western and Oriental Studies, Guangzhou Documentary and China Series. Western bourgeois news ideas, mode of running newspapers and propaganda methods have enabled our people of insight to recognize the important role of newspapers and magazines and have created a strong desire to run newspapers and periodicals. The first person to report in Guangdong is Lin Zexu. In 1839, Lin Zexu banned opium from Guangdong as an imperial envoy. In order to “explore the conditions of Yiti, know its true and true” and formulate a “controlling party”, he set up a translation hall in the Yamen to collect foreign-language newspapers and magazines published in Macao and to translate the news and comments about the opium trade and the government of the United Kingdom into Chinese named “Newsprint of Macao”, copied several copies and provided it to Guangdong Governors and Yamen and the court as reference for non-smoking and preparing for war. “Macao Newsprint” became China’s earliest translated newspaper. Lin Zexu became the first Chinese to “see the world.” After Lin Zexu was dismissed from office, Wei Yuan categorized “Macao Newsprint” as its content on China, on tea, on smoking ban, on military affairs, and on five categories of foreign nationals in each country and compiled them into the “Macao Monthly Report” "A book.
