２０００年２月底，德国艺术家帕尔德海姆的作品《世纪之轴》展示于江苏镇江。本文在赏析这次艺术活动的同时，对现代艺术的发展和演变作了简略的回顾。作者认为，对于现代社会而言，艺术已不是简单的反映和表现生活的手段。它既非模仿本能的体现，亦非单纯的情感交流，而是更多地表现出人对生存的世界和生命意义的一种追问。同时，现代艺术形式的丰富性也为当下艺术的创造提供了多样的可能。
The end of February 2000, the German artist Paldheim’s work “axis of the century” displayed in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. In the meantime, this article gives a brief review of the development and evolution of modern art while appreciating this artistic activity. The author believes that art is not a simple means of reflecting and representing life to the modern society. It neither imitates the instinct manifestation nor the simple exchange of emotions, but rather shows more people a question about the living world and the meaning of life. At the same time, the richness of the modern art forms also provide various possibilities for the creation of the present art.
