Although it is known that epoxides are formed during the metabolism of polycyclic hydrocarbons, it is not clear whether the former is the active intermediate metabolite of the latter carcinogenesis. Some polycyclic hydrocarbons and their “K region” epoxide carcinogenic activity have been observed, but the results are contradictory. The authors used an in vitro-in vivo test system. A lung graft of BALB/C female mice aged one month was implanted in Trowell’s matrix containing 4 μg/ml of test compound for 30 minutes, then placed in separate media for 24 hours to remove any residual Carcinogens, and implant the graft at an age of 2 to
