In order to complete their obligations under the UNFCCC, developed countries are beginning to find alternative ways to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions at a lower cost. This raises concerns about a forest-based carbon balance. Tree planting and forestry practices can be used to actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Preventing or reducing the current release of carbon into the atmosphere by existing forests through conservation measures or improved management of forests. In this paper, we describe a series of well-balanced projects that have been explored in this area and describe in detail a project involving the planting of trees on degraded forests in Sabah, Malaysia. It is estimated that after a 60-year rotation, this project will be able to balance 183 Mg C / hm 2 with an average of 100 Mg C / hm 2 · a.
