无论是在法国,还是在中国,法国植物学家、博物学家谭卫道都可算作19世纪博物学史以及生物学史上的一位重要人物。在第二次鸦片战争后,他前后三次到中国内地探索,采集了大量的动植物标本与活体。谭卫道是最早到中国内地考察动植物物种的欧洲人之一,也是研究中国物种地理分布最早的人之一,在博物学实作方面做出了有力的贡献。他是最早发现并描述大熊猫、金丝猴、麋鹿、珙桐等物种的西方人,这些物种轰动了整个欧洲社会。研究谭卫道的博物学实作,也可以得到一些有价值的思考。
Both in France and in China, French botanist and naturalist Tan Wei Tao can be regarded as an important figure in the history of natural history in the 19th century and in the history of biology. After the Second Opium War, he went to Mainland China three times to explore and collected a large number of specimens of plants and animals. Tan Wei Tao is one of the earliest European people to visit flora and fauna in mainland China and one of the earliest people to study the geographical distribution of Chinese species. He made a significant contribution to the practice of natural history. He was the earliest Westerner to discover and describe the giant panda, the golden monkey, the elk, and the Davidia involucrata, which caused a sensation throughout Europe.
