庄子乃至整个道家哲学,向来被认为崇尚自然、反对人为。荀子站在儒家立场批评庄子“蔽于天而不知人”。基于当代动物权利论争的背景重新考察这一公案,结合传统注疏分析《庄子》有关“无以人灭天”论述的涵义,可以看出庄子明确主张动物有其独立的价值与权利。结合西方思想史上有关人与动物关系的代表性观点进行考察,可以发现:批评庄子有见于动物权利而忽略人的权利的荀子,在西方不乏同道,但荀子的理论同道——当代的反动物权利论者,在有关争论中并没有取得压倒性优势;相反,其对手对他们的主要论证提出了一系列质疑。
