In 1994, industrial minerals extracted from the United States accounted for two-thirds of the total value of non-fuel unprocessed minerals in the country, with a value of approximately US$23 billion. According to the statistics of the US Bureau of Mines, which is responsible for statistics on domestic production and consumption of minerals, the US$23 billion includes US$12.3 billion in construction materials, US$4.3 billion in fertilizer minerals, and US$3.2 billion in chemical raw materials. Industrial minerals can also be used as glass and refractory materials, abrasives and gemstones, extenders, fillers and pigments for paper, coatings, plastics and rubber products, and other consumer products.
