The Wanganui Basin between South and North Island of New Zealand has the characteristics of thick crust and low geothermal flow. Previously, the vertical component of the subducting drag on the overlying crust caused deformation of the crust in the form of thin plate to explain its cause. This study shows that there are a number of paradoxical discrepancies in the thin plate bending hypothesis. Therefore, it is suggested that the plate underplating may be the common cause of the central mountain range in the basin and its east side. The pattern of underplating can explain the synchronicity of the uplift of the mountains and the sedimentation of the basin and the southwest migration of the subsidence center of the basin and the first settlement and uplift of the northeast of the basin. It is also not contradictory to the observation of low heat flow in the basin.
